Dubbed the “City of Five Flags”, this waterfront city has flown the colors of Spain, France, Britain, Confederates, and America; an eclectic mix of European architecture lines downtown Palafox Street, which boasts assorted art galleries, fine-dining restaurants, and a multitude of boutiques. A trip downtown also offers a guided tour of the Historic Pensacola Village.
The military heritage of Pensacola is notably upheld as well. Historic battlement forts occupy the shores, as the city was constantly invaded by European and American forces over the centuries. In addition, Pensacola has been fondly nicknamed the “Cradle of Naval Aviation” because the waterfront city is home to the first naval air station. The Pensacola Naval Air Station has turned out military aviators and astronauts, including Neil Armstrong and Alan Shepard; houses the world-acclaimed Blue Angels squadron; and showcases the largest naval aviation museum.
