One of Anoka's extremely unique traits is its believed to be the first city in the United States to put on a Halloween celebration. Early on in 1920, Anoka merchants and other people in the community joined forces to try and stop Halloween pranks. Thus the large-scale Halloween party was put together as a way for all the children to get free candy and lots of entertainment. In October of 1920, Anoka had its first Halloween celebration. This celebration has been a continued tradition every year since, with the exception of two years during WWII. The annual celebration has contributed to Anoka considering itself the "Halloween Capital of the World" and now has many events during October which bring the community closer together.
